Nesting: Preparing a calming nursery

Nesting, nourishing, and creating your perfect nursery.

Back in the day, nursery’s needed to have a theme. From farm animals, to ballerinas, to puppy dogs, and more… choosing a theme was first on a momma’s agenda.

We are living in a more modern time where simplicity and uncluttering is prevalent, therefore I scrapped the idea of a theme (for its complexity) and went with a very eclectic, yet elegant setting.

I knew I didn’t want to paint the walls a baby color like light blue, pastel yellow, minty green, or soft pink… because that felt too limiting. So, I kept it painted as is… a neutral tan: Sherwin-Williams Nomadic Desert (6107).

From there, I knew I wanted a bright and airy feeling with fresh plants and accents of white and gold.

I thought about waiting until birth to reveal gender, but then the decor ideas took over my mind! If having a boy, I wanted jade green accents to bring in a richness of warmth and comfort. If having a girl, I wanted soft pink accents to spark femininity and passion. So there it was: a room with tan walls, white furniture, gold accents, and a teeny splash of color, jade green or soft pink, to speak character into the nursery. I found out I was having a girl, and instantly went to work on her new space!

Without further ado, here is the nursery (angle by angle). Many of the pictures will have clickable links to take you to the sites where you can purchase the items!

The changing pad that I used is called a Peanut Changer, by Keekaroo. Click the image above to check it out. I love it because I can wipe it clean after every use. It is non-toxic and does not require a cloth. The foam is soft and durable, and it comes with a protective strapping mechanism that can be used for added safety.

Click on image above to purchase the Hemnes, 8 drawer dresser from IKEA

This IKEA dresser ended up being the PERFECT height for a changing table. I am 5’7” and did not want to hunch over to change my little one. Finding a dresser that was tall enough, but not too tall was a top priority for me.

I purchased 4 pink crystal knobs from Anthropology that I added to the top 4 drawers. For the remaining knobs, I spray painted them a brushed gold. The original color was a darkened brushed silver.

Babyletto Swivel Glider and Gold Pouf

I wanted a small and modern glider for the nursery and found the perfect solution on Amazon. The Babyletto Swivel Glider is durable (even after three years of constant use). It wipes clean, and it is comfortable. The ONLY downside is that it was rather heavy for two grown men to carry up the stairs.

Also shown in this picture is a gold pouf from Wayfair. When I first got it, I thought it smelt a little goofy. The gold is painted or sprayed on and it took a few months for the strong smell to go away. The upside is that the gold never chipped or faded away. It held up extremely well. We still use this (three years later), and it is still a fairly durable pouf. Though it has more recently lost some of it’s firmness due to my toddler standing on it, and jumping onto it… it is still a win in my book.

See that little snake plant on the end table? That is one of my favorites! Still going strong today. I purchased it from IKEA for $9.99 and only give it a few drops of water once or twice a week.

Nursery: Pleated blackout drapes and Crystal Drum Chandelier
Okay, I have to rave about these pleated blackout drapes for a minute! They are wonderful and truly black out the room!

I purchased them online from halfpricedrapes.com
and I made sure to order them extra long. Why? The longer the drapes, the taller and bigger looking the room and window.

I installed the curtain rod all the way up to the top of the wall (give an inch and a half or so). I also had to order an extra support bracket so that the rod would not bend and sink in the middle. CAUTION. The drapes are VERY HEAVY.

I purchased 3 panels of the drapes so that they could completely cover the window when closed.

The chandelier is from Pottery Barn Kids.  Though this style is no longer in stock, they continue to have many great options!

Now for a quicker breakdown…

The changing table lamp was purchased from World Market. That little diaper organizer on the dresser was purchased off of Amazon. It is called the DEX Diaper Spinner

I made the two pink, gold and white canvases that are hanging perpendicular to the dresser.

I also removed her closet doors to extend the room. The cubby inside the closet was purchased from Target. I used colored velvet hangers to organize her clothing by size and gold shower hooks to hang her shoes.

The mirror is also from IKEA. It is apart of the Hemnes collection.

I decorated her crib wall with decal stickers purchased off of Amazon. This wall took me a FULL DAY to complete. I had to measure so that the design was even and precise.  I used gold dots and white triangles for a modern look.
